We are seeking a dynamic, service focused Lab Manager responsible for the daily management of lab operations at Element Biosciences. This position will work closely with both R&D and Manufacturing to ensure a high level of lab support and service. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, with experience supporting manufacturing, lab asset management, and knowledge of safety regulations. This role will report to our Senior Manager, Operations and will be an on-site San Diego basedrole.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day-to-day lab operations by identifying, addressing, recommending, and implementing improvements to ensure efficient lab infrastructure and support
  • Responsible for lifecycle management of lab equipment including service contracts, repairs, calibrations, preventative maintenance, and record retention
  • Review equipment service contracts and CAPEX/Non-CAPEX quotes to make recommendations or determine course of action
  • Establish and maintain relationships with vendors, sales representatives and service providers
  • Source lab equipment and consumables, identify alternatives and negotiate pricing
  • Coordinate tasks associated with lab space allocation for new employees, incoming equipment, and lab relocations
  • Manage VMI program including train and oversee support staff to ensure inventory management, freezer defrost program, glass wash and autoclave services
  • Create and participate in lab safety programs, ensuring good lab upkeep, chemical inventory management, and regulatory compliance
  • Develop and maintain laboratory standard operating procedures, establishing good work practices
  • Support cold storage equipment monitoring and response procedures
  • Work and collaborate cross-functionally with Facilities, IT, R&D, Quality, Sourcing, and Finance teams
  • Mentor and cross-train Lab Operations team members as needed

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related field
  • Five (5) years work experience in scientific lab operations preferably as a Lab Manager
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Lab Operations and lab equipment
  • Customer service oriented with desire to support others
  • Strong understanding of scientific concepts and terminology
  • Knowledge of lab safety protocols (including Cal/OHSA), Chemical Hygiene Plan, and hazardous waste management
  • Must be able to follow instructions and maintain a safe work environment
  • Ability to interact and communicate with multiple personalities and prioritize competing needs

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds
  • The position requires physical activity and the handling of chemicals; Candidates are required to follow the safety protocols and be familiar with personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in the laboratory environment

Travel: 

  • Up to 10% domestic travel, or as needed

Job Type:

  • Full-time, Exempt

Base Compensation Pay Range:

  • $97,000 - $118,000



 

In addition to base compensation noted above, you will be eligible for stock options, discretionary annual bonus, no cost health insurance plans, 401k with company match, and flexible paid time off.
